5 Signs a Young Person Might Be in Crisis (And How to Respond with Care)
Because behavior is often a form of communication.
As parents, teachers, or neighbors, we may notice changes in a young person’s behavior — but not know what they really mean. Sometimes, those behaviors are silent cries for help.
1. Sudden Withdrawal or Isolation
If a normally social teen suddenly pulls away from friends, family, or school, it could signal emotional overwhelm, anxiety, or depression.
2. Explosive Outbursts or Irritability
Aggression or “acting out” is often misunderstood. For many youth, anger is a mask for fear, pain, or trauma.
3. Changes in Sleep or Appetite
Sleeping too much, too little, eating irregularly, or showing signs of disordered eating are common physical responses to stress or anxiety.
4. Risky or Reckless Behavior
Substance use, unsafe sex, or running away can be forms of self-medication or escape from emotional distress.
5. Hopelessness or Negative Self-Talk
Pay attention to what they say about themselves. “I’m a failure” or “Nobody cares” are often invitations for someone to listen deeper.
