What Is Trauma-Informed Care—and Why Does It Matter for Our Communities?
Because healing should never cause more harm.
At the Center for Youth & Families, we don’t just ask “What’s wrong?”—we ask “What happened?”
Trauma-informed care is more than a buzzword. It’s the foundation of how we engage with youth and families — with compassion, safety, and purpose.
What Is Trauma-Informed Care?
Trauma-informed care is an approach to service delivery that recognizes the widespread impact of trauma and actively works to avoid re-traumatization. It’s about creating environments that are physically, emotionally, and culturally safe for everyone.
Why It Matters
Because trauma is common: Many of the youth and families we serve have experienced abuse, neglect, community violence, housing instability, or systemic harm.
Because traditional systems often retraumatize: Juvenile justice, school discipline, and even healthcare systems can unintentionally deepen wounds.
Because healing happens through trust: Trauma-informed care centers the relationship, not just the referral.
